Instant forms vs. landing pages: which gets dealers better leads?

By Jake Offill, Orbit House Web · · 5 min read

Every dealer campaign has to answer one question: when a shopper taps your ad, where do they go? You have two real choices. A Meta instant form that opens right inside Facebook or Instagram, or a landing page built for that offer. Both work. They just produce very different leads.

What an instant form is

An instant form opens inside the app the moment someone taps your ad. Meta can prefill their name, email, and phone number from their profile, so submitting takes a couple of taps. You can add custom questions, including multiple choice, short answer, and conditional questions that change based on the last answer. A form holds up to 15 questions in total (Relevant Audience).

Meta offers two main form types:

  • More volume is the default. It's the fastest path to submit and usually produces the most leads.
  • Higher intent adds a review screen where people confirm their details before submitting. It runs only in mobile Facebook and Instagram feeds, and it suits offers where every lead gets a call, like test drives and quotes.

What a landing page is

A landing page is a page on your own site built for one offer. The shopper leaves the app, sees the same vehicle and the same numbers from the ad, and fills out a short form or taps to call.

It takes one more step than an instant form, but you control everything on it: the full price breakdown, photos, your disclaimer, trust signals, and a call button that stays on screen as they scroll.

Volume vs. quality

This is the core tradeoff. Prefilled instant forms are so easy to submit that some people do it without much thought, and you get wrong numbers and accidental submissions. A landing page asks a little more of the shopper, so fewer people finish, but the ones who do usually meant it.

That's why cost per lead alone is the wrong scorecard. Judge each option by cost per qualified lead, cost per appointment, and cost per car sold. Our car dealer marketing guide shows how the form fits into the full path from ad to showroom.

Instant form details that trip dealers up

  • Leads expire. Without a connected CRM, instant form leads can only be downloaded for 90 days after submission. Connect them to your CRM or a lead tool so nothing gets missed.
  • Financing limits. If the ad falls under Meta's Financial Products and Services category, your instant form can't ask for age, gender, relationship status, or location (Jon Loomer).
  • Every question costs leads. Qualifying questions filter out bad fits, but each extra field lowers completion. One or two good ones is the sweet spot.

The setup we recommend for dealers

You don't have to pick one. The strongest dealer campaigns use both:

  1. Prospecting ads go to a Higher intent instant form with one qualifying question, like "When are you looking to buy?" with this week, this month, or just looking. Sales calls the "this week" leads first.
  2. Retargeting ads go to a landing page. People who already saw the offer get the full breakdown, photos, and a call button. Fewer leads, stronger buyers.
  3. Every lead gets a fast response. Whichever path they take, the first reply should go out within minutes. The form is only half the job.

What a dealer landing page needs

  • The same vehicle, price, and look as the ad, so nobody wonders if they're in the right place
  • The full price breakdown: MSRP, discounts, rebates, net cost
  • A short form with name, phone, and one trade-in question
  • A sticky "Call now" button on mobile
  • Your required disclaimer, word for word
  • Fast load time, since most shoppers are on their phone
  • The Meta Pixel, so leads count as conversions and visitors can be retargeted

Getting leads to your sales team fast

The best form in the world doesn't matter if the lead sits for hours. Whichever option you choose, set it up so every lead reaches a person right away:

  • Connect instant forms to your CRM or a lead tool, directly, through an integration, or with a webhook. Don't rely on someone downloading a spreadsheet.
  • Send landing page leads straight to the right inbox or CRM, tagged with the campaign they came from.
  • Alert the person who handles them, not a shared inbox nobody owns.
  • Log every lead, so you can prove which ads produced which appointments.

Common mistakes

  • Too many questions. A long instant form kills completion. Ask for what sales needs to make the first call.
  • A landing page that doesn't match the ad. If the price or vehicle is different, shoppers bounce.
  • A slow page. Every second of load time on mobile costs you people who already tapped.
  • No thank-you step. Tell people what happens next, like "a specialist will text you within minutes," and then make sure it happens.
  • Judging by cost per lead alone. Cheap leads that never answer aren't cheap. Track appointments and sales.

Frequently asked questions

Are Facebook instant forms good for car dealers?

Yes, for volume. They are fast to submit, which brings more leads but more low-quality ones. Using the Higher intent form type and one qualifying question improves quality.

Do landing pages convert better than instant forms?

Landing pages usually convert fewer people but produce stronger leads, because the shopper sees the full offer and chooses to reach out. Judge them by cost per appointment, not cost per lead.

How long do Meta instant form leads stay available?

Without a connected CRM, instant form leads can be downloaded for 90 days after submission. Connecting a CRM or lead tool avoids losing them.

What questions should a dealer instant form ask?

Name and phone, plus one qualifying question such as purchase timeline or whether they have a trade-in. Each extra question lowers completion.
